If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples.
--John 8:31 The Jerusalem Bible
The DISCIPLE Bible Study program is our featured long term study
group. Disciple 1 is an in-depth
Bible study class where students read over 70% of the Bible in 34 weeks.
Students discover how they are connected to all of God's people throughout
history and how they fit into his plan. Eight to ten students start disciple as
lone persons growing closer together and closer to Jesus Christ as the course
progresses. DISCIPLE aims at transformation, not just information. The
class concludes in May with a 2 day retreat. OUMC offers Disciple
1 starting each August. Each student has a study manual with biblical reading
assignments six days a week and a 2 1/2 hour meeting once a week.
Registration begins this Summer for the August class. Contact the
581-6853 or click

Christian
Believer concentrates on
the classical doctrines of the Christian faith—those that emerged in early
Christianity as it struggled to understand its Scripture and its experience of
Jesus, and that have remained central to church teaching through the centuries.
These basic Christian beliefs distinguish Christians from other people
and Christianity from other faiths. Christian Believer
groups consist of twelve members and a leader and meet weekly for 2 ½
hours for a period of 30 weeks. Each
participant makes a commitment to daily preparation involving 30-45 minutes of
study six days a week and weekly attendance at and full participation in the
group study session. The goal of Christian
Believer is to make available to people the substance of the Christian
faith that the church has confessed as a way of connecting to God and living
faithfully.

Jesus
in the Gospels: Jesus
in the
Gospels focuses on the portraits of Jesus found in the four
Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The word in used in the title signals that this study takes an
approach different from the familiar “life and teaching of Jesus” approach
of reading stories and accounts of what Jesus said and did in order to draw
conclusions about their meaning and about who Jesus was.
Participants should expect to spend 45-60 minutes in daily study six days
a week for thirty weeks and 2 ½ hours per week attending and participating in
the scheduled weekly meetings. This
study looks at the way each Gospel writer presents events and teachings and at
the picture of Jesus that emerges in each of the Gospels.
(Disciple I is a prerequisite to this study.)

The Companions in Christ series offers small groups a powerfully
transforming experience in spiritual formation.
The 28-week journey in spiritual formation moves through 5 parts:
Christian journey, scripture, prayer and spiritual guidance.
As groups grow in these area they develop practices to carry forward
throughout their faith-journey, and they encounter God in new and transforming
ways. Following each reading are
five daily exercises to help you ponder the theme more deeply and prepare for
the group meeting. These exercises
may involve some combination of scripture reading, spiritual practice,
reflection questions and journaling and will take about 30 minutes each day.

Witness
is a 25-week study to create a culture of vital Christian witness by
helping individuals and congregations prepare to share their faith as they
become more excited about Christian witnessing. Witness is designed
to be a transformational experience. In this study, you will take a
journey full of challenges like climbing a trail. Around every bend each
participant will find answers and make discoveries about his or her own
life and faith. Each week participants are expected to read, study, and
complete assignments. Then, once a week, participants will gather to
discuss their experiences and support one another in their journeys. |
